In Sanskrit Ujjayi means to conquer, to be victorious. Practice of Ujjayi Pranayama reduces a flow of air at a height of the throat and varies the pressure in the lungs, that increases the exchange of oxygen and circulation of blood. Ujjayi breathing during the practice of Yoga increases concentration that helps to hold the challenging poses during the asana sequences longer by bringing the space and strength to every muscle of the body. It also helps to release tension accumulated during these difficult asanas and regulates the body temperature that prepares the body to do the asanas execution; heat makes stretching safer and cleanses the internal organs out of toxins that have accumulated within.
Do you remember this fantastic feeling when having a body massage? Well, your digestive system feels the same way after a sequence of carefully selected asanas. Mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine create the digestive system along with the teeth, tongue, liver, gall bladder and pancreas. Throughout the day, your digestive system process food, secretes fluids, digested fiber, absorbs nutrients and removes waste. At least that is the way it should be, if everything works properly.

Pranayama is a study of a breath control that aims to bring peace of mind and internal balance of a nervous system. Its literal meaning explains the entire essence, as prana is air, breath, life force and yama is a control, discipline. After connecting these two words we have pranayama which is a control of a breath and a control of a life force.
